Spiritual Deception

Lesson from 1 Timothy 1

Question #7

Compare verse 14 with verse —- How would this help Timothy keep a clear perspective for his own mission?

Recap on Timothy:

Paul, the aged and experienced apostle, writes to the young pastor Timothy who is facing a heavy burden of responsibility in the church at Ephesus.  The task is challenging: false doctrine must be erased, public worship safeguarded, and mature leadership developed.  In addiction to the conduct of the church, Paul talks pointedly about the conduct of the minister.  Timothy must be on his guard lest his youthfulness become a liability, rather than an asset, to the gospel.  He must be careful to avoid false teachers and greedy motives, pursuing instead righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and the gentleness that befits a man of God.

Week #4         Spiritual Deception

Date: October 25, 2017

Question #6

In what way was Paul himself like the false teachers before his conversion?

Read 1 Timothy 1: 12-17

Response:

Being much like the false teachers, Paul prior to his conversion misused the law.  He lacked grace, faith & love.  God had mercy on him and he became a new man.  Paul is showing in this context that God redeems false teachers.  In the process, He describes what a relationship with God is really based on i.e. mercy, grace, faith and love that are instilled in Christ Jesus.
